During the next fifteen years, information and control systems will become a dominant force in aircraft design. Instead of making separately designed major aircraft systems work togehter, the designer will exploit the interaction and integration of aerodynamic, structural, and propulsion systems controls to provide a better aircraft. Some of the benefits of such integrated designs have been demonstrated already, but these are only first-generation applications. Much more significant benefits are achievable by the year 2000, and the role of control and information systems in this will be absolutely essential. All facets of airplane design will be dependent upon these crucial technologies. Indeed, as stated by a select government/industry/university aeronautical review committee in reviewing national aeronautics policy, 'Systems integration will play an increasingly important, if not dominant, role in the development of advanced technology aircraft ... advances in the traditional aeronautical disciplines will no longer ensure superior products.
