Scattering phenomena involving aircraft are so complex that their numerical modeling has been limited to first-order computational methods such as physical optics, empirical formulas, or statistical methods. It is desirable to employ more accurate techniques such as the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD) on aircraft models of simplified geometry. This GTD model, when examined in conjunction with experimental data for real aircraft and simplified aircraft models, can lead to a great deal of understanding of the aircraft scattering phenomena. In this research, it was observed that the distance-dependent GTD formulation can be used to compute aircraft RCS as long as the distance is carefully chosen.
