In 1979, EPI, with assistance from Hughes, began a program to study process variables and to develop controls that would allow manufacture of large quantities of electrodes of flight quality. Tests of electrodes produced during that study showed that the quality achieved exceeded that of electrodes originally made in the laboratory. All steps in the manufacturing process are controlled by a Manufacturing Control Document (MCD) which was written for the Air Force Ni-Cd contract and amended to reflect the findings of the variables study. More than 12.000 electrodes have been manufactured using the process. These electrodes have been used by Hughes in conjunction with the Air Force for flight program cells and advanced development program cells. The electrodes have also been used by NASA-Lewis in a technology program and by Hughes in an internal development program.
