The battery requirements for planetary missions over the next ten years are not unique, and generally can be satisfied by present electrochemical systems. There is however an emphasis on low cost and standardization, and 'inherited hardware' is often preferred even though mass may not be optimized. For those missions which may be mass sensitive, there should be a continuation in the development of the Ni-H2 and lithium systems. Future planetary missions may require completely autonomous operation, and thus require batteries which can be accurately modelled, and whose state of charge can be correctly determined. New high performance battery systems should be studied and developed now so that they will be available for future planetary spacecraft with more complex requirements.
