The capability of the lithium sulfur dioxide primary battery to provide the energy density and power density over the operating temperature for high rate aerospace applications has been demonstrated. Two 36 V batteries have been fully characterized and have yielded energy densities of 47 and 50 W-hr/lb and specific energies of 2.6 and 2.3 W-hr/in. The system has been qualified against rigorous aerospace environmental specifications including high shock levels, acceleration, random vibration, etc. A reliability analysis indicates that the expected MTBF of the system is 440.337 hr. This high reliability coupled with the superior operating characteristics and the excellent shelf life of the system clearly qualifies the high rate lithium sulfur dioxide primary battery as a candidate for many demanding aerospace and missile applications.
