In the London situation where the major problem is bus bunching caused by variations in traffic flow, the major objective of the bus operator is to try and restore the correct interval between buses. Direct control of the traffic light system might be an advantage but is unlikely to be an option. The approach favoured by operators with a London-like situation is the use of a vehicle location system, which enables adjustments in the service to be made. The vehicle location system currently being assessed by London Transport on its 36 group of routes has served to confirm that the key role played by the bus to road communication link.
