The trend for tomorrow's aircraft cockpits is clearly towards incorporating a digital map as part of the crew station. It is clear that maps play an extremely important part in enabling the crew to perform their function, and a considerable effort has been made to ensure that cartographic maps and projected map systems meet the needs of the crew. Digital maps are currently being evaluated for a variety of roles, from tank navigation to low-level high speed flight. It is apparently assumed that the digital map can completely supplant the more traditional forms of map. This paper makes a case for denying this assumption and suggests that both types of map can find a useful place in the cockpit, by making the best use of the unique characteristics of both. In this way, we can get far more out of the combination than we would from just the two separate capabilities.
