The constraint of signal co-ordination clearly restricts the extent to which priority can be given at individual sites. However, research work appears to indicate that a worthwhile reduction of around 12 % in bus delay is possible using selective vehicle detection in conjunction with the UTC system, even with heavy conflicting bus flows and saturated junctions in the network. The savings in vehicle hours amount to approximately Pounds 4 m annually at the non-UTC junction signals in London. This is sufficient to allow the project to be enhanced to include the monitoring of pedestrian signals, the replacement of obsolete electromechanical controllers with down-line loaded microprocessor controllers, and a large central computer capable of holding sufficient information to support the signal design office, the operation of the fault control centre and maintenance contractors, and UTC.
