A military application requires a battery to power an artillery delivered electronics package. The required battery must be compact, lightweight, and have a 14.6 A-hr capacity above 10 V. The battery OD is limited by the artillery barrel; furthermore, the battery must be able to withstand the severe shock and spin forces which occur at firing. The duty cycel required is 1.6 A for 6hr followed by 0.1 A for 50 hr. Shock specifications are 17.000 g's for 8 msec and 16.000 rpm for 30 sec. The Hi-G cell is 4.25 in. diam x 0.25 in. in height. The anode is a Li disk, 3.75 in diam x 0.045 in. thick coated with cyanoacrylate. The anode is connected to the anode pin by means of a stainless steel collector. The cathode collector is standard Shawinigan carbon black mixed with a 20 % by weight portion of finely divided copper. Each cathode weighs approximately 3.5 g. The electrolyte fill is 40 g of 1.6 M LiAlCl4 in SoCl2.
