Moving targets can be detected with a non-coherent radar by observing the small fluctuations in the signal amplitude that are caused by interaction of the target signal and ground clutter signal. In an airborne radar, high frequency fluctuations due to true moving targets must be separated from lower frequency modulation due to relative motions of individual scatterers within the illuminated area - particularly those generated by aircraft motion. Using fast Fourier transform computations to perform this filtering allows the filter characteristics to be continuously adapted to the observed clutter spectra. Signal processors based on this principle have been effectively demonstrated for both sidelooking and forward-looking airborne operation.
