Expert systems are computer programs that utilize a human expert's knowledge in the solution of difficult problems. Many successful applications have been applied to expert tasks such as diagnosis. A general approach to rule-based system design has also emerged. However, the success of applying these techniques to a given problem assumes that the human expert's problem solving knowledge can be decoupled from his world and common-sense knowledge. In this paper, I will discuss several limitations in te application of basic rule-based systems to the flight domain. Ongoing research at the Air Force Institute of Technology in knowledge representation, planning, qualitative reasoning, and model-based systems and their impact on future expert system architectures will be discussed.
