The first American railroad electrification at 25 kV, 60 Hz for passenger service will be 65.2 route miles (105 km) of what is populary known as the Erie Lackawanna. Work of conversion from 3 kV dc is underway and it is ecpected that 60-Hz operations will commence late in 1984. The following features are believed to be unique for the electrification of a railroad anywhere in the world: Pilot-wire relaying for trolley circuits. Special scheme of load-tap-changing at one supply station. An ultra-reliable scheme of communications. Semiconducting jackets to ground the shielding of wayside communications and signal cables. Capacitors to drain electrostatic inductive from signal power lines. This article primarily describes the electrical aspects of the reelectrification.
