Static frequency changers are well established today in propulsion systems for electric and hybrid vehicles. Growing interest is being shown in the use of trigistor frequency changer-controlled toothed gearless propulsion systems for electric and hybrid energy-saving road and off-road vehicles. Toothed gearless propulsion systems built up from a combination of trigistor frequency changers and traction synchronous or asynchronous AC motors offers many advantages, such as stepless road speed control, low losses, low harmonic generation and fast control of both the torque and speed. The new type of RC trigistor indirect frequency changer presented here is very simple in design and has features making it technically superior to thyristor indirect frequency changers of conventional types. It should have a given place as the technically and economically best solution in toothed gearless propulsion systems in the future. The trigistor frequency changer-controlled toothed gearless propulsion systems have good dynamic properties and are highly efficient. In addition the problem of high accelerating currents of traction AC motors does not arise. The difference between the costs of a propulsion system with thyristor polyphase DC chopper and traction rotating commutator DC motor and one with trigistor frequency changer and traction AC motor has substantially narrowed, but the AC alternative is still more expemsive. However, there are examples of users who in their investment calculations have also taken account estimated maintenance costs and then found tha the trigistor frequency changer-controlled toothed gearless propulsion system is the most favourable alternative.
