This project designed and developed a control system for a hybrid gasoline/electric vehicle. The vehicle is a series hybrid consisting of an electric motor to drive the vehicel, a set of batteries, and an engine and generator combination to provide power to the motor and charge the batteries. The hybrid gasoline/electric car was designed to operate in a series configuration (in which all drive power is provided by the electric motor). The reference vehicle is a compact with a four-speed manual transmission. The primary emphasis of this project was the utilization of a microcomputer for system control and regenerative braking system. This system was designed with versatility and expansion as major considerations. Eventually, a diagnostic program will be added for easy troubleshooting and repair. It may be possible to use both generator and battery power when greater acceleration is needed. Battery life, regenerative braking, and various hardware configurations will be tested for optimum performance, durability, and economic value.
