The latest design of established reliability aluminum electrolytic capacitor was evaluated to determine the parts' suitability for use in high reliability airborne and space applications. Eight hundred and seven (807) capacitors were subjected to either temperature step stressing at five temperatures or to temperature exposure (thermal shock and thermal cycling) of 2000 cycles. The failure rates of the parts in these tests were 91.5 % for temperature step stressing and 86.1 % for thermal shock and cycling. The results of the evaluation indicated that these parts should not be used in applications that exceed MIL-C-39018 requirements.
