Although maritime satellite communications were first offered in 1976 through the Marisat system, it was not until 1979 that Inmarsat, a global maritime satellite organization came into being. The organization consisted of 38 member countries and Teleglobe Canada is the designated signatory for Canada. The Inmarsat network presently offers automatic telephone and telex completely integrated with worldwide public services. This unique network allows communication from inexpensive shipboard satellite terminals as small as 1.2 m in diameter. Plans will be discussed to outline the future development of: (1) High-speed data services (2) New ship earth station terminals and features (3) Plans to improve coverage of the Canadian Arctic.
