There is a need to accurately measure true ground speed in a number of commercial and agricultural vehicle applications. Two primary requirements highlight this need: 1. The requirement to control driven wheel slip to allow maximization of the effective tractive efficiency and to reduce tire wear. 2. The requirement to measure true ground speed independently of wheel slip or rolling wheel radius to permit accurate control of planting, spraying, fertilizing, etc. Alternate methods of potential true ground speed measurement are reviewed. The microwave doppler technique is analyzed in further detail as the chosen sensing technique. The specific operational and environmental criteria used in the development of a microwave true ground speed sensor is highlighted. Finally, the resultant product's performance is reviewed. This review was performed both under careful controlled laboratory conditions as well as under a variety of field conditions while installed on an agricultural tractor.
