A prototype low cost 14 1/2 GHz telephony terminal has been developed to demonstrate the feasibility of providing domestic satellite communications in the 14 1/2 GHz band for offshore applications. The terminal incorporates a stabilization system to compensate for the motion of a typical semi-submersible drill rig. The terminal is capable of providing two voice channels using a frequency-modulated single carrier per channel technique (SCPC-FM). The terminal also has television receiver capability. The features of the terminal are described. Recommendations for further developments in offshore terminals are included.
