An optical fibre star connected multiplexing system has been described. The system operates in the broadcast mode on a time shared basis. There is no central bus controller or central 'exchange'. This enhances the reliability of the system and reduces the component count. It also allows greater flexibility in use of the system with regard to failure modes, diagnostics and reducing latency on selected functions. Optical fibres ease the problem of achieving high noise immunity in the system and minimising harmonic radiation. Fault tracing is also simplified. The use of the broadcast mode and optical fibres does at present incur a cost penalty which will be eroded by component development. This requires co-operation between suppliers and manufacturers to ensure the necessary high volume of units to reduce costs.
