A key problem facing a tactical commander is the determination of the composition of the opposing forces. In recent years, our ability to collect information has far outstripped our ability to process it in a timely fashion. The emerging technology of artificial intelligence provides a method of integrating large amounts of information from a diverse set of sensors and providing a tactical commander with information about the location, makeup, and classification of opposing units, and ultimately with an assessment of his opponent's intent. This paper describes the design of a system currently under development to perform military unit identification from a combination of radio and radar intercepts, MTI radars, and imagery. In particular, the paper describes the knowledge representation, program structure, and control structure of this program. This research is under the sponsorship of the Rome Air Development Center at Griffiss Air Force Base, New York.
