The potential advantages of distributed microcomputer systems over single processor systems can be used to implement a gun and fire control system. Current trends show that a number of microcomputers interlinked can produce modular, expandable and adaptable control systems with a high degree of hardware transparency. Fault tolerance can be designed into such systems with faults detected and diagnosed to prevent the use of faulty units while maintaining system function at a degraded level. A first, essential, strategy for future projects is a strictly top-down approach. This means that one must first specify system requirements, and only as a second step handle implementation techniques. Top-down design allows the project to survive technological evolution, because new systems can be designed from existing specifications. Previously a standard bus with an Ethernet communications scheme for a combat vehicle would have seemed unnecessary and far too costly to realize. But, with the advent of single chip microcomputers with independent protocol controllers and serial interface units, this approach is becoming a reality.
