Better real fuel economy and driveability for the customer were the goals at the initiation of this programme. The cost limits implicit for a vehicle positioned in the lower medium segment of the market was the constraint. Higher technology in the form of engine management was the technique chosen. Out of a number of ways to achieve the fuel economy goal, three were selected. 1) Lower idle speed 2) Fuel cut-off during deceleration 3) Precise control of cold enrichment mixtures and fast idle setting. The resulting driveability benefits were automatic cold enrichment and the vehicle refinement of low, smooth quiet idle performance. The bases for these decisions are described below.
