The European Space Agency's first remote-sensing satellite ERS-1 will carry a number of advanced instruments designed to carry out detailed monitoring of ocean and offshore areas for meteorological, oceanographical, ice-monitoring and a range of other purposes. This article describes the design philosophy and intended operation of a priority payload element, the active microwave instrument.
