A computer controlled electric dynamometric plant for testing hybrid propelling systems is described. The dynamometric plant is mainly constituted by a D.C. machine which is mechanically coupled to the propeller shaft of the vehicle under test and electrically connected with a motor generator set and by a digital computer which controls all testing operations. The dynamometer can simulate all practical operating conditions experienced by vehicles on the road, without the use of additonal inertial or friction loads, but merely adapting, through a digital control, its electric torque to match the prescribed load both in acceleration, steady motion and braking phases. The structure and the design principles of the digital control system are described in the paper and test results are reported.
