A high energy density rechargeable battery, lithium-metal sulfide, is under development for advanced military satellites; operating in conjunction with a photovoltaic array, the battery would provide system power during periods of earth eclipse. The higher system power requirements foreseen, e.g. 30 kW, dictate a battery energy density of at least 110 Wh/kg to keep battery weight manageable. Lithium-metal sulfide, a high temperature (450 C), molten salt battery, is optimistically expected to achieve the energy density goal through re-design of the cell and by the incorporation of higher energy electrodes. Automated cycle testing of 40 present-design cells simulates mid-altitude and geosynchronous duty cycles and examines the effects of depth of discharge on performance and cycle life.
