Visually driven tactile recognition is a viable means of performing object recognition and acquisition. It is superior to visual recognition alone in that it can directly sense surface orientation and 3D coordinates, while working in parallel with vision routines. As tactile sensor technology improves more complex surfaces can be recognized and acquired. The visual clues provided by the image can be used successfully by the tactile sensor to explore interesting areas in the scene. We are presently working on speeding up the tactile sensors movement and processing. Presently the finger is being driven by 2 microprocessors, one monitoring changes in pressure on the sensor's surface, the other used for positioning. However the algorithms for movement and plane determination are being performed in a PDP-11 host. This communication between microprocessor and host is slow and work is being done to put more of the tactile recognition processing in the microprocessors.
