Three-dimensional (3-D) portrayal of information which exploits the human's highly refined sense of depth has been considered for its potential in facilitating the transfer of information in future aircrew cockpits. However, before 3-D displays can be seriously considered for implementation, a number of critical research issues need to be resolved. The following will be addressed in this paper: military applications for 3-D displays, display quality specifications, 3-D information transfer, and user selection standards. The research program and facilities of the Human Engineering Division of the Air Force Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory will be described with respect to current investigations of requirements for 3-D displays.
