Self-repairing extends fault tolerance to the control surfaces through reconfiguration of the healthy control surfaces. Aircraft heretofore lost will not only be recoverable but will be able to continue the mission in most cases. Autonomous maintenance diganostics will permit median repair times to be reduced to eight hours or less. All Technical Orders and maintenance instructions for ground crews will be contained in the autonomous maintenance diagnostics computer, reducing the infrastructure to house and maintain the logistics tail. Improved recovery of battle damaged aircraft and reduction in median repair times from 43 to 8 hours gives a net increase in aircraft available in combat reconfiguration are a drop-in reconfiguration module and system impairment detection and classification module. The latter combines with the autonomous maintenance diagnostics to provide rapid assessment and repair. Positive real-time status of aircraft configuration to pilot contributes to the improved survivability. Self-repairing flight controls can be implemented primarily through software using low cost microelectronics to simplify high cost hardware items, and reduce life cycle costs.
