The following conclusions can be drawn from the observations and evaluations of the ICR technique at RSRE and at ATCEU. An aid such as ICR should allow controllers to issue long-term clearances in heavy traffic conditions, thus reducing workload. Although controllers had the task of inputting to the computer the information about both trial and confirmed clearances, they seemed to consider that the assistance they received was well worth their effort. The automatic monitoring of an aircraft's progress was so successful that controllers came to relay on it, perhaps unduly so. The technique provided a facility by which several controllers could interact with the method of control in a way which gave a satisfactory, flexible and safe division of responsibility between them. The general difficulty of keeping the controller abreast with the air situation implies that it might be difficult for him to understand the solutions provided by any but the simplest form of automatic resolution algorithm. The technique looks as though it can be applied to other air situations beside then en-route employed in the experiments.
