Liquid crystals thermography is an effective technique for detecting flaws in fiberglass composites. A complete nondestructive evaluation system must combine a flaw detection technique with geometric and structural characterization of a detected flaw. Here, a liquid crystals kit capable of providing quantitative assessments of the structural integrity of fiberglas boats is developed. TeEnsile tests, four-point bending tests, and surface pressure tests are performed on specimens of SMC-R50 containing a wide variety of machined flaws. SMC-R50 is a sheet-molded fiberglass composite similar in constituents and mechanical properties to materials used in fiberglass boat construction. For the types of flaws considered, it is found that the tensile strength of a flawed specimen depends only on the reduction of cross-sectional area caused by the flaw.
