The implementation of AC induction traction drives requires several new design trends for systems rated at 1000 kW and above. To utilize the most advanced semiconductor devices now available, high-voltage, high-speed drive machines with higher gear ratios are necessary. A preference for inductive current filtering rather than capacitive link filtering has been noticed in existing large induction industrial drives. To this end, modern locomotive technology that is to benefit from the most recent power device technology, will have larger surge impedances at the inverter-motor interface by virtue of magnetically compensated induction machines either external or integral to the motor, rather than revert to passive electrostatic compensation.
