An integral SSR antenna for ARSR has been developed which has independently optimized sum and difference patterns in the azimuth plane. Gain variation in elevation and associated effective azimuth beamwidth variation that are characteristics of the integral SSR antenna are acceptable for the SSR system. The SSR primary feed is composed of six array elements; a pair of three azimuth elements above and below the low beam horn of dual beam ARSR feed. Measured secondary patterns of the integral SSR antenna, the reflector size of which is 14 m wide by 8 m high, shows satisfactory characteristics; excellent low angle sharp cut-off in elevation, desirable plateau shaped pattern at high elevation angles, desirable cross over level of the sum and difference patterns due to the difference beam gain improvement, low sidelobes for both sum and difference azimuth patterns, lower than -24 dB. Therefore, a monopulse direction finding system using this integral SSR antenna is promising.
