Battery amortization and replacement are the most costly items in operating an electric vehicle. Much emphasis gas been placed on improving battery cycle-life to reduce cost per mile of vehicle operation, but other important parameters have received little systematic consideration. Total energy throughput (the product of cycle life times average depth of discharge) is the most significant parameter affecting life-cycle operating cost of a battery. Published battery test data are used to show that maximal total energy throughput, and hence minimal battery cost, may occur at surprisingly small average values of depth of discharge. Some effects of battery aging also are considered. Additional data are needed to identify operating strategies for minimal life-cycle cost.
