Mass accelerators that avoid wall contact between the projectile and surrounding accelerating structures have the potential advantage that they could be repeatedly fired for a large number of shots, and with a high repetition rate if required. They avoid (or minimize) wall coupling effects that may become severe at high velocities, and also offer the prospect for precision aiming of the free-flying projectile in the accelerator by making transverse momentum corrections prior to exit from the device. These properties make such systems attractive for a number of applications.
