ANSI/API 2530 and ISO 5167 show how gas volume, weight and mass flow rates may be calculated from the differential pressure generated across an orifice plate located in a standardized pipe length. AGA Report Number 5 uses the equations from 2530 and known relationships between ideal specific gravity and calorific values to calculate energy flow rates. This paper discussed the flow equations and the advantages of on-line density measurement, showing how a single, in-line density transducer may be used, together with a microprocessor to provide rapid, reliable, low cost, on-line solutions to the flow and energy equations. Similar techniques enable computation of calorific values to provide a 'flameless' calorimeter and improved measurement of energy flow rate for control of fuel gas supplies to steam generators, cracking and distillation furnaces, leading to considerable energy saving. These techniques will increase in value as fuel costs rise.
