A visit to the Alabama Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. You are looking at what is known as an Instrument Unit (IU) Ring. A five-footwide band (of which 24 inches are support rings), looped to form a ring some 22 feet in diameter, it is the mechanical brain of the Saturn 5 rocket. The IU Ring, explains Osborne, 'controlled everything related to the launching and staging of the rocket. The computers you see gave the signal and programmed the flight. There were some commands that could have been overridden by the engineer, but primarily, the IU Ring handled everything on its own.
