The potential if MIAB welding for automobile applications is discussed. The axle that was MIAB welded comprised a cross tube and flanged spindles. The choice of this process depends on accuracy of spindle alignment and overall finished length, weld quality reliability and costs, and these compare favourably with the alternatives of friction or flash welding, or MAG fillet or butt welds. Investigations were made into weld tolerances when tube ends were machined out of square, welded with misaligned joints, damaged tube ends, current variation, and forge force variation. Bend tests indicated that welds were satisfactory and failures occurred in the adjacent tubing. Production machines and weld quality monitoring are discussed. The future potential is outlined in the light of the present material thickness limitations.
