A large covered construction hall has now come into operation at the Birkenhead shipyard of Cammell Laird Shipbuilders Ltd, a member of British Shipbuilders. Two ships up to 120000 dwt can be constructed simultaneously in the hall, which is 145 m long by 107 m wide by 50 m high and is divided into two bays, each centred on a slipway leading into the River Mersey. Other production facilities have been substantially redeveloped, all with the objective of providing factory-like conditions, consistently to permit fast, accurate work and thereby to increase productivity and quality.
