A simple noncontact technique for monitoring the velocity of agricultural tractors using modern solid-state Doppler radar was developed and tested. The true ground velocity of the tractor was measured by a Doppler radar on different field surfaces, and the results were compared with the readings obtained from the fifth wheel. The differences between the velocities measured by both methods were found to be below 0.5 percent for the MA radar and below 2 percent for the GE radar. The experimental results confirmed technical feasibility of the Doppler radar velocity monitor. Recent advances in solid state technology provide relatively low-cost microwave Doppler radar packages which can be used in agricultural applications as velocity monitors.
