For welding curved hull shells a twin electrode submerged are welding process with a backing system consisting of glass fibre tape and sliding copper shoes has been developed. The tape is stretched beneath the welding groove and the water-cooled shoes move synchronously with the welding head. As the shoe moves a correlation is observed between the width of the bead and the burnt part of the tape. An optical sensor detects the condition of the heated zone of the tape and provides feedback for controlling welding speed and current. Simulation tests showed that underbead penetration can be satisfactorily controlled by this method.
