The concentration at Leyland, Lancashire, of Leyland Truck and Buses total product engineering facility, coverig vehicles produced at the Bathgate, Scotstoun, Workington, Leyland, Wolverhampton, Southall and Bristol plants, together with bus bodies from the coachworks of Park Royal, Lowestoft and Leeds, has made the move to computer analysis in vehicle design a profitable reality. Recent vehicle types such as the Leyland Marathon heavy truck range, the Leyland National single decker and the B15 prototype double decker are all vehicles in which the computer has pleyed a key part in design. While there is little novel in the way the computer is used at Leyland, the Engineering facility is probably unique in the way it has brought the computer into the working environment of automotive designs, with a very watchful eye on the real commercial viability of this design aid.
