The oceans of the world have been rightly described as our last resource. To explore and exploit this resource without medical hazard requires a shift in diving technology from the ambient pressure soft suit to the armoured "one atmosphere' suit. JIM is the first of a new generation of such suits, and his development is described against the background of one of the major engineering problems: that of sealing the limb joints.
