Microwave landing system programs show a variety of approaches to a proposed "universal" MLS for the future. Australia: An all C-band system using an electronically-scanned planar-beam antenna is being developed. France: Ground-derived system; signals from an airborne interrogator are subjected to angular measurement by ground sensors to determine aircraft position. Unit. Kingd.: Air-derived system utilizing a commutated Doppler scanning beam technique. West Germany: All-weather landing system (SEL-ITT; Siemens) is based on use of distance-measuring equipment, operates on L-band frequencies, using air-derived and ground-derived information. Responses to interrogation pulses from aircraft.
