Cloud of uncertainty is hanging over future microwave replacement for the long-used instrument landing system (ILS), despite general agreement that an improved system will be needed. The problem exists because there are too many possible technical solutions and requirements. Not since the early post-world war 2 period, when almost every major avionics company proposed its own technical solution to air traffic control problem, has future progress been so seriously jeopardized by excessive numbers of alternative solutions.
