Advanced remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) provide an attractive means of adapting declining defense resources to the political, financial and military realities of the post-Vietnam era. These pilotless aircraft can extend man's vision into hostile environment at little or no risk to himself. Equipped with small tv cameras, data transmission links and other products of recent acionics progress, the rpv can be "piloted" by qualified pilots or skilled operators located in a launch aircraft or a ground control station safely removed from high-risk combat areas. They might perform such tactical roles as reconnaissance, electronic warfare, forward air control and interdiction, now assigned to manned aircraft.
