Mean-time-between-failure of military avionics appear to be significantly better than official Def. Dept. figures indicate, judging from data reported here during the recent inertial syst. joint services data exchange conference. An analysis indicates that data collection systems, originally created to provide information on maintenance manpower utilization and spare parts consumption, understate MTBF. The analysis was limited to inertial systems. The general conclusions appear to be applicable to many other types of avionics equipment.
