To be competitive with the diesel engine a lorry turbine must utilize the high temperatures implicit with ceramic hot-path components in order to achieve comparable or better fuel economy. Unfortunately rotational stresses in the turbine rotors of contemporary two-shaft turbo-machines are too high for ceramic components produced by economic production methods. It is suggested however that if such an engine is turbocharged there is an opportunity to reduce the centrifugal stresses very significantly and improve the part-load performance markedly. If such a course is adopted, the high pressure turbine rotor, due to its small size, is more sensibly executed as a radial in-flow design. This in itself brings an additional benefit since this type translates more readily into the ceramic idiom than an axial type. An in-house project to design and develop a ceramic radial rotor has been partially completed. This component has run successfully at high rotational speeds and a gas temperature of 1000 K. Further commercial applications for economically produced ceramic rotors are noted.
