Extruded cordierite honeycomb ceramics were developed as substrates for automotive exhaust catalysts. The honeycomb structure is made possible by a unique extrusion die design. The cordierite crystallites in the fired ceramic are preferentially oriented with the result that this structure has a markedly lower-than-average thermal expansion. Orientation results from the orientation of platy raw materials during extrusion. Chemical purity, stoichiometry, and firing rate are also shown to affect thermal expansion.
