In this study, a Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA)-based compression sensing system is developed to assess the support conditions of concrete pavement slab. The system is implemented by embedding the distributed optical sensing fiber in unique packages and placing them under concrete pavement. The main advantages of the BOTDA technology are the strains can be measured continuously with high accuracy and spatial resolution. Additionally, the developed sensing system is able to assess the distribution of support conditions in real time. Compression tests and temperature calibration experiments were conducted to investigate the measurement performance of the developed sensing system. Several data analysis procedures were applied to extract the actual value, and then the support conditions are characterized by a contact matrix. Moreover, a field test was conducted on a relief road in Shanghai. The test results demonstrated the practicability of the developed BOTDA-based sensing system.
