The paper presents a new approach for precision navigation that uses AM radio broadcasts and a digital phase measurement technique. Using this new digital approach and also several conventional analog techniques, the phase difference of two received signals is measured. By sampling these signals using a high speed A/D converter and applying a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), phase differences can be measured with an accuracy of ±0.05°. This provides ±0.032 m range accuracy when using a 1300kHz AM radio signal.
